Prevalence of Piriformis Syndrome and its Association with Job Burnout among it Workers
Abstract
Background: Piriformis syndrome is a condition with globally incidence rate at 5% to 36% where piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain. Burnout is describe as mental disorder because of extended exposure to profession related strain globally it stands at rate of 70% annually. Piriformis syndrome and burnout together are extensively widespread trouble among work professional, caused by prolonged sitting. Objective: To determine prevalence of Piriformis syndrome among IT workers by using Fair test and to determine burnout by using Maslach Burnout Inventory. To determine association between Piriformis Syndrome and burnout among IT workers in Karachi. Study Design: Cross- sectional study. Methodology: This study involved 374 Information Technology professionals. Piriformis Syndrome was assessed by using Piriformis diagnostic criteria while Burnout was determined by using Maslach Burnout Inventory Scale.
Results:The results have been obtained from 374 targeted Information Technology Professionals. Majority of the participants comprised of 74.1% reported mild piriformis syndrome. Fair test for assessing piriformis syndrome contributed 21.1% of positive results. Low level of burnout was reported 55.9% while high depersonalization score was reported 55.9% similarly and moderate level of high personal achievement was recorded in 42.5% among Information Technology workers. Conclusion: This study showed no significant association was found between piriformis syndrome and burnout in Information Technology professionals while depersonalization showed mild correlation with piriformis syndrome.
